Campaigns

In 2007, SITA Cornwall resurrected a popular local character loved by residents and visitors. The character, Mrs Baggit, was the face of an education campaign in the county in the 1980s and 90s, appearing on signage in lay-bys encouraging people to take their litter home with them.

Mrs Baggit's message was simple: 'Please take your litter home' but in 2007 it was agreed that a new breed of characters was needed to bring the waste message bang up to date. SITA Cornwall launched a competition for local schoolchildren to devise Mrs Baggit's children - new characters who will spread the modern reduce, reuse and recycle messages.

Around 400 schoolchildren took part in the competition and the winners were chosen by a panel of judges at the Royal Cornwall Show. One of the judges was Jenna Robbins, who at the age of five, created the original Mrs Baggit.

Nicola Lilley of Bude Junior School was the winnner of the 5-8 age group. Nicole’s big green recycling bin carries a characteristic Baggit smile and the message, ‘throughout rain and shine you should recycle all the time.’ The winner of the 9-12 age group was Callum Lewis of Mabe CP School with 'Recy' and he hopes that 'it will persuade people to stop litter bugging and to recycle.'

Look out for Mrs Baggit's children as they spread the reduce, reuse and recycle messages across the county!
