Composting
Composting is another great way to divert waste from landfill.
HWRC composting
You can dispose of your compostable garden/green waste at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).
We accept many types of green waste:
- Hedge cuttings
- Grass cutings
- Leaves
- Twigs
- Branches
Please do not include ragwort or japanese knotweed in your green waste.
The green waste is then taken to a composting facility (either The Green Waste Company in St. Erth, or TT Compost Ltd in St. Tudy or WH Bond in Trerulefoot) where the material is shredded, composted, screened and graded before being used in local agriculture and for landscaping.
Home composting
You can also compost waste at home. You can buy a composter from your local DIY store or Cornwall Council are currently running a subsidised compost bin scheme. For further information clink on this link to the Cornwall Council website (http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=25167) or call 0844 571 4444. You can also contact Recycle for Cornwall for advice on home composting (0300 1234 141). Home composting produces nutritious soil which aids the growth of healthy plants.
At home you can compost:
- Shredded paper and soft card
- Crushed egg shells
- Garden cuttings
- Raw fruit and vegetables
- Tea bags and coffee granules
- Contents of the vacuum cleaner bag
- Hair and fur
Compost Awareness Week
This year, Compost Awareness Week took place between 04 and 13 May 2010 and the theme was 'Give it a Grow'. During the campaign, almost 30 tonnes of compost was given away to members of the public visiting one of four HWRCs across the county.
