Composting

Composting is another great way to divert waste from landfill.

HWRC composting

You can dispose of your compostable garden/green waste at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).

We accept many types of green waste:

  • Hedge cuttings
  • Grass cutings
  • Leaves
  • Twigs
  • Branches

Please do not include ragwort or japanese knotweed in your green waste.

The green waste is then taken to a composting facility (either The Green Waste Company in Hayle or TT Compost Ltd in St Tudy) where the material is shredded, composted, screened and graded before being used in local agriculture and for landscaping.

Home composting

You can also compost waste at home. You can buy a composter from your local DIY store or you can contact Recyle for Cornwall for advice on home composting (0845 073 2002). Home composting produces nutritious soil which aids the growth of healthy plants.

At home you can compost:

  • Shredded paper and soft card
  • Crushed egg shells
  • Garden cuttings
  • Raw fruit and vegetables
  • Tea bags and coffee granules
  • Contents of the vacuum cleaner bag
  • Hair and fur

Compost Awareness Week

Nearly 30 tonnes of compost was given away at our household waste recycling centres in Cornwall last year, as part of Compost Awareness Week.  This year, Compost Awareness Week will take place between 2 - 8 May 2010 and the theme is 'Give it a Grow'.

Composting tips

  • Place your composter on level, well-drained soil to let water out and worms in.
  • Turn your compost regularly. This will improve air circulation and speed up the composting process.
  • Keep the compost damp but not wet.
