Bid to temporarily keep open the household waste recycling centre at United Mines

While the search continues for a new permanent replacement facility, SITA UK wants to continue to provide local residents with a household waste recycling centre (HWRC) at United Mines until the end of 2014. It has therefore submitted a planning application for a time extension to Cornwall Council.

The HWRC would continue to operate in the same way as before, although with the closure of the United Mines landfill facility on 31st October 2010, residual waste would be transported to another location for final disposal.

The search for a permanent replacement facility is being conducted across the wider area, including Camborne, Pool, Redruth and Truro.

Phil Rudin, SITA UK’s Regional Manager for Cornwall and Devon said: “The household waste recycling centre at United Mines is the busiest of our twelve sites, dealing with 17,000 tonnes of waste in 2009 and achieving a recycling rate of 67 per cent in June 2010”.

“We want to continue to offer local residents this facility until a new permanent replacement facility can be developed elsewhere and we hope that our application for a time extension will be looked upon favourably”, Phil added.

As a part of the application, SITA UK has also applied to continue using the weighbridge and offices at the site until December 2014.

Elsewhere, the preliminary earthworks have been completed for the new Falmouth HWRC and surplus soil has been taken to United Mines and used for restoration. Contractors will be returning in the middle of August to complete the remainder of the HWRC construction works.
