Cornwall Council requires SITA to begin to develop plans for a temporary waste transfer station at United Mines
Since asking SITA to withdraw plans for a waste transfer station at Scorrier the council must find an urgent temporary solution to minimise the lorry movements carrying waste up to the landfill site at Connon Bridge, near Liskeard.
As James Pike, SITA’s General Manager in Cornwall said: “When we close the landfill site at United Mines in October 2010, we will only have the site at Connon Bridge to take all of the county’s domestic waste. This will put an enormous strain on the waste collection vehicles unless urgent action is taken to create a system for transferring the waste from the collection trucks into much larger lorries.”
He continued: “We are determined to work with our liaison group and the communities local to the United Mines site to understand and minimise any inconvenience that any temporary arrangement might cause. Once we come to the planning stage there will be a public consultation and all the views of local people and the environmental experts will be taken into account in the submission document.”
A waste transfer station will be needed in the area, by October next year, regardless of the outcome of the appeal to be granted permission to build the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre.
