Green tips for Christmas and the New Year in Cornwall

Residents in Cornwall are being encouraged to be green, so that the impact of Christmas and New Year celebrations on the Cornish environment is minimised.

Apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, Cornwall’s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) will continue to be open seven days a week this winter, between 9am and 4pm, giving local residents plenty of opportunity to recycle bottles, tins, cardboard and so much more.

The only exception is Tintagel household waste recycling centre which operates from Friday to Monday (inclusive), and will also be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Five festive green tips from SITA Cornwall:

  • When wrapping your gifts, use old magazines, newspapers or posters instead of fancy wrapping paper.
  • Recycle your real Christmas tree at your local household waste recycling centre, it will be turned into compost at a local facility.
  • If you have an artificial Christmas tree which you want to replace, and it’s still in reasonable condition, pass it on to a local charity or community group.
  • Keep your Christmas cards and use them during the coming year for craft projects or trim them for use as gift tags next Christmas!
  • Use your leftover meat and vegetables to make a curry or a hearty stew.
