Launceston gets new household waste and recycling centre
A new household waste and recycling centre (HWRC) has opened today, Friday 27 January 2012, in Launceston offering local residents a wide range of recycling options in a well designed, spacious environment.
The new centre can be found at Bangors Road on the Pennygillam Industrial Estate, Launceston, PL15 7PH and will replace the nearby Bangors Quarry site.
During winter opening times it will be open from 9am to 4pm, seven days a week, and will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Councillor Julian German, Cabinet Member for Waste Management, Climate Change & Historic Environment, said: “This is great news for people living in and around Launceston and yet further evidence of our continuing commitment to improve recycling facilities across Cornwall.”
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those residents that currently recycle. For residents that do not recycle, please try the kerb side collection service. It is easy to use and it is cheaper for the tax payer to recycle than dispose of waste. If you have larger items, please use the bulky household waste collection service or the household waste recycling centres. For further information please phone Cornwall Council on 0300 1234 141”, Julian concluded.
Phil Rudin, Cornwall Regional Manager at SITA UK said: “We are delighted to be able to provide a much improved household waste & recycling centre, which will encourage local people to recycle more than ever before.”
“Our local team of staff look forward to seeing recyclers, both old and new, and making sure that visitors get to know the layout of the centre and where they should put the different items they bring with them”, Phil added.
The team of staff who managed the centre at Bangors Quarry, closed that site at 4pm on Thursday 26th January, and have now moved across to the new site, ensuring that local knowledge and jobs are retained.
Materials accepted at the new site, which weren’t available for recycling at the previous facility, are plastic bottles, wood and rubble.
A replacement refuse transfer station has also been constructed, which will enable local non-recyclable waste to be bulked up and taken to Connon Bridge landfill by larger trucks.
