New Management and Opening times for Bowithick Recycling Centre
The management of Bowithick recycling centre was officially handed over to SITA Cornwall by Adam Paynter, Deputy Leader of Cornwall County Council on Friday 6th July. MP for North Cornwall, Dan Rogerson and County Councillor Janey Comber were also in attendance for the event.
Bowithick recycling centre was saved from potential closure after public consultation highlighted its value as a resource for North Cornwall residents.
SITA Cornwall continues to improve recycling rates at the recycling centres taken over within the original contract on 1st November last year with increases of nearly 80%, diverting a total of 12,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.
The County Council are currently investing £45,000 in improvements to the site, which include new surfacing, fencing, safety barriers, white lining and improved drainage. SITA Cornwall are looking closely at ways to improve recycling at the site.
Louis de Poncheville of SITA Cornwall said: “We are pleased to be managing Bowithick on behalf of Cornwall County Council, as well as 10 other recycling centres throughout Cornwall. Even though the site is small I think a lot can be done, for example by installing extra collection containers for a wider range of materials, to increase the recycling rates on this site and I hope it will become an even more useful resource for the communities for which it serves.’
Following discussions with local residents and councillors, from July 6 the Bowithick Recycling Centre at Tintagel will be open every weekend. Members of the public will be able to visit the site on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays which will be more convenient than the current arrangements under which the site is closed Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. In future Bowithick will be closed midweek.
