Refuse transfer station proposed for Pool, Cornwall
Refuse transfer station proposed for Pool, Cornwall
SITA UK is seeking full planning permission for a refuse transfer station on land to the rear of its materials recycling facility (MRF) in Wilson Way, Pool, Cornwall.
With the closure of the landfill operation at United Mines at Carharrack set for 31 October 2010, there is a pressing need for a refuse transfer station in the wider area. The facility would accept kerbside collected household (black bag) waste arising within the former Carrick and Kerrier districts from dustcarts, where the materials would be ‘bulked up’ and transferred on to SITA Cornwall’s Connon Bridge landfill site.
Pre-application consultation with residents and businesses in close proximity to the existing Pool MRF has been conducted and this has helped shape the final submission, through the introduction of landscaping and noise protection measures which would be installed along Druids Road. A presentation outlining the initial proposals was also given to Carn Brea Parish Council.
Phil Rudin, SITA UK’s Regional Manager for Cornwall and Devon said: “We feel that this existing industrial estate location is a suitable place for the construction and operation of a refuse transfer station as the facility would be co-located with an existing waste management operation and good transport links are present”.
“To reduce impact on the surrounding community, we are proposing the introduction of both natural and man-made screening that would reduce noise to the eastern side of the development and the transfer station building would be similar to other light industrial storage/distribution buildings at Pool Industrial Estate”, he continued.
The proposed refuse transfer station would be an important part of the infrastructure and operations that SITA Cornwall runs across the county as a part of the Integrated Waste Management contract it has with Cornwall Council. The facility would be capable of transferring around 70,000 tonnes per annum of local waste.
The application for full planning permission, prepared in partnership with Cornwall Council’s Waste Disposal Authority, has now been submitted to Cornwall Council for due consideration.
