Reuse message wins prizes at Royal Cornwall Show

SITA Cornwall is delighted to announce the names of three people who won a competition at the Royal Cornwall Show to estimate the total cost of a sitting room, which was created on the company’s stand. The mocked-up room was filled with furniture and other household items that had been saved from landfill.

Contestants were asked to calculate the total cost of all the furniture and bric-a-brac in the room. All the items were recovered from recycling centres in Cornwall and put up for sale by Recycling Westcountry at their shops in Liskeard, Mount Hawke and Hayle.

To win the money, contestants had to estimate the actual price charged at the reuse shops, which was £117 for the whole room, including the pictures on the walls and the CDs in the rack.

Ross Johns of Goldsithney, Amy Rylett from Penzance and Bryn Spear of Bodmin were all closest with their estimate of £120.00.

Phil Rudin, Operations Manager of SITA Cornwall said: ‘I was impressed by how much time people spent assessing all the items as it was not at all easy. It was an important part of our stand, clearly showing that many useful things are thrown away that, if they are rescued and cleaned up, can still be bought for bargain prices.’

Over the three days of the show 128 people entered the competition with most being way over the mark, with the highest estimate for £12,000, which just goes to show the excellent quality and range of unusual items that can be found in Recycling Westcountry’s outlets.
