SITA collects plasterboard for recycling

SITA Cornwall has announced that it has developed facilities at the company’s 12 household waste recycling centres across the county to enable householders to recycle plasterboard from 1st April.

SITA Cornwall has joined forces with Roche based company Glebe Quarry Ltd who will process the plasterboard and then use the material for clay pit remediation.

Phil Rudin, Operations Manager for SITA Cornwall said, “Plasterboard will now be one of over 20 items that can be recycled at our HWRCs and we are really pleased to be working with a local company, as it cuts down on road miles that materials have to travel to be reprocessed and provides a new guaranteed supplier for a Cornish company.”

Phil continued: “We are constantly working to develop so that we can start collecting different materials on our sites for recycling to ensure that as much waste is diverted from landfill as possible.”

The new partnership between SITA and Glebe Quarry Ltd is in response to the introduction of new legislation governing the disposal of plasterboard which means that plasterboard can no longer be landfilled with biodegradable waste and must be disposed of separately.

Phil said: ‘We welcome this new legislation as recycling is a much more environmentally friendly way of dealing with waste material than landfill and as space is running out in Cornwall, we need to ensure that useful recyclable products are recovered where possible and not buried in the ground.’

He added, ‘It is very important that people separate their waste carefully before visiting the HWRCs as it saves them time and helps to ensure that as much material as possible gets recycled.’

All HWRCs will have separate containers on site to collect plasterboard from Wednesday 1st April 2009.
