SITA Cornwall has been presented with a cheque for £10,000 and certificates of achievement by Dave Moore of Aylesford Newsprint, the company which recycles most of the paper collected at the kerbside and in bring banks in Cornwall.

SITA Cornwall rewarded for recycling achievements

At the presentation Mr Moore congratulated SITA and the people of Cornwall, as he said: “This presentation has been made in recognition of the quality of the paper that has been sorted for recycling by people in Cornwall. In the short time since SITA has been operating the two facilities in Bodmin and Pool an impressive 50,000 tonnes of high quality paper has been sent to us for recycling.”

Grant Scott, SITA Cornwall’s Business Manager thanked Aylesford Newsprint on behalf of those who played a large role in earning the award and announced that SITA Cornwall will be looking to spend the money on projects that further increase recycling awareness within the Cornish community. He said ‘It is important that Cornish residents carry on recycling and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Despite some of the recent news reports, we have had no problems in finding markets for our recycling as the quality is so high’.

North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson, Caradon District Council and North Cornwall District Council officers, invited guests and SITA Cornwall managers who attended the event were taken on a tour of the recycling facility.

SITA Cornwall’s materials recycling facility and education centre at Bodmin has celebrated several achievements since it was established by Caradon District Council, North Cornwall District Council and Cornwall Paper Company in 2004.

The materials recycling facility has an impressive 99% recycling rate meaning that only 1% of the materials that are processed at the plant are not suitable for recycling. Since SITA Cornwall took over management of the education centre in April 2008 the facility has welcomed over 1000 visitors from schools, community organisations and other groups.

Community groups, schools and other interested parties interested in a tour of the recycling facility at Bodmin are asked to contact the SITA Cornwall helpdesk on 0845 6300 300 or Cornwallhelpdesk@sita.co.uk Tours are free of charge and help is available with transportation costs.
