St. Austell household waste recycling centre runs reduced service
From the beginning of March, SITA Cornwall’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Menear Road, St. Austell will run a reduced service. This will be in operation until the new site opens in the summer.
As part of SITA Cornwall’s £15m programme to improve recycling facilities in the county, St. Austell HWRC is undergoing a major redevelopment to provide a modern facility with better opportunities for recycling, greater accessibility and improved traffic flow. Although arrangements have been made for the site to remain open during the extensive works, from the end of February there will be a reduced service due to space constraints.
This will result in the HWRC being unable to accept the following materials until the new site opens in the summer:
- Bric a Brac
- Cans
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Plastic bottles
- Wood
The site will continue to accept the following materials:
- Asbestos
- Batteries
- Chemicals
- Fridges & freezers
- Fluorescent tubes
- Gas bottles
- Glass
- Green waste
- General waste
- Metal
- Oil
- Rubble
- Textiles
- TVs & monitors
- Tyres
Phil Rudin, General Manager for SITA UK in Cornwall, said, “We are extremely pleased with the redevelopment works at the St. Austell site so far, and that we are able to continue to accept many materials throughout the renovations.”
He added, “We are advising members of the public to use alternative recycling centres at Wheal Prosper, Lanivet PL30 5HB and Connon Bridge, East Taphouse PL14 4NP to avoid possible delays. We would also encourage local residents to utilise their kerbside collection service, as well as bring banks that are situated in car parks and supermarkets in the area”.
Since starting Cornwall’s integrated waste management contract in November 2006, SITA Cornwall has made major improvements to the accessibility and efficiency of HWRCs. This has been part of a £15m programme to develop recycling facilities across the county. The upgrades have helped to increase the average recycling rate at the HWRCs from 25 per cent to more than 60 per cent.
Opening times for all HWRCs:
Winter opening: 1st October – 31st March 09.00 – 16.00
The HWRCs are open seven days a week throughout the year and closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.
