Truro boy wins top recycling award

Kyran Richardson, an eco-minded pupil at Threemilestone Primary School in Truro, has won the top award in SITA Cornwall’s competition to find the County’s Young Recycling Champions of 2011.

The award means that Threemilestone School will be able to push the recycling message to pupils even further next year, as they have chosen to accept a rainbow coloured bench, made partly from recycled plastic bottles, as their prize. Kyran has also been given a certificate of achievement and a 6 in 1 solar toy set.

Schools across Cornwall were invited to nominate pupils that had made outstanding efforts and achievements to promote recycling and waste reduction in 2011.

Threemilestone School nominated Kyran, because ‘he is the School’s Environment Minister and has worked hard to promote both recycling and the use of green energy. In his attempt to promote sustainability at school he has contacted the Council to find out how the school can develop sustainable energy, he has also made agreements to visit a solar farm, raised money through recycling clothing to improve the playground environment and organized Eco-warriors to collect compostable waste during break times’.

Lorena Clavijo, Education and Community Officer from SITA UK said “It is amazing and inspiring to see what a good job pupils across Cornwall do to reduce the impact of their school on the environment and Kyran’s efforts have been exceptional.”

Mrs Crossthwaite, a teacher at Threemilestone School said, “We are very proud of Kyran and happy for this recognition as he has always tried to promote sustainability at school and works very hard as our Environment Minister. Kyran, and our Headteacher Mr Lees, have decided that the best prize for the school will be a bench made out of recycled materials in rainbow colours, it looks amazing and will remind us everyday of the need to recycle”.

There were also two runners up in the competition: Nikita Hill from St. Columb Minor Academy in Newquay and James Pugh from St Mark’s School in Morwenstow. The awards were announced at an event to mark SITA Cornwall’s 5th Anniversary, at Trelander & St Clements Community Hall in Truro.
